Pain in the neck
Before Thanksgiving Riley was having shooting pains in his neck. He would yelp if he turned his head too far to the left. We thought maybe a pinched nerve? So we took him to the vet, and they put him on pain meds and anti-inflammatories as we expected. After a week, he improved... then slowly regressed. He started limping, walking with his head down, and avoiding playful Penny at all costs. Back to the vet for x-rays (Merry Christmas Riley). Turns out, he has a compressed disc. Ouch! They prescribed more meds and extreme rest for 2 weeks. Extreme rest!? How do you get a dog to extremely and completely rest for 2 weeks especially with a puppy in the house? We've done our best to keep him quarantined in the office and laying down, but he is tugging on my heart strings with the pathetic looks... as if he's saying, "This is torture being confined in here, let me out please. I'll be good, I'll stay calm and relaxed." Yeah right! Needless to say it's been a bit of a pain in the neck for us to keep him still and separated from Penny. Not sure what will follow the 2 week rest period. Maybe a visit to the doggie chiropractor if he's not back to normal. I need to ask the vet some specific questions -- Is this permanent? Will it limit his activity from here on out? Will he still be able to hike, swim, run, play? How might chiropractics help? What do we do about a flare up? Will keep you updated on answers and the progress of the patient.
